Salomon Rondon's £16.5million release clause has expired, according to a report.
Rondon is one of Rafa Benitez's main summer targets at Newcastle United. But the club's hierarchy weren't prepared to activate his release clause, which has expired according to the Express & Star.
United manager Benitez was even prepared to swap Dwight Gayle for Rondon, but an agreement couldn't be reached between the two clubs and the striker.
Asked if he still wanted Rondon after the 4-0 defeat to Braga, Benitez said: "Yes, it could be fine if we have an agreement, but, at the moment, we have to respect West Brom and what they decide."
Gayle, an unused substitute against Porto last weekend, started against Braga.
Asked about the 27-year-old's situation, Benitez said: "It seems that Dwight will stay."
The transfer window closes on August 9.
