Newcastle will look to finalise a season loan for Salomon Rondon from West Bromwich Albion on Monday.
Talks are continuing over Dwight Gayle going the other way also on loan but both players want permanent sale options put into the agreement.
Rafa Benitez's side are looking to strengthen up front, having confirmed Aleksander Mitrovic will not be returning.
The Serbian target man has agreed to join Fulham permanently after spending last season on loan in the Championship.
Newcastle and the Cottagers have agreed a deal worth up to £20million and the addition of Rondon would be a welcome addition to the striking resources.
Rondon would compete with Joselu and Japanese forward Yoshinori Muto for a place in the starting side.
The club completed a deal for Muto from Mainz worth £10million, subject to his work permit being granted.
