With 18 months left on his previous deal some of Europe's top clubs began to take a keen interest in the England striker, but he has now committed his future to United until the end of the 2018-19 season.
Rooney: "I'm very happy to have signed a new long-term contract with Manchester United.
"This is one of the biggest clubs in the world and to know that I will be playing here for the majority of my career is something that I'm looking forward to.
"I'm happy that everything is now finalised and I can carry on concentrating on my football."
With Newcastle's wage cap said to be £60,000, this shows how the Premier League is edging towards a two-tier league in itself - those with mega-millions ... and the rest.
I cannot blame Mike Ashley for the wage cap, because he is probably right to introduce it.
But it does ask the question - will we ever be in a position to challenge for the title like we did under Kevin Keegan and Sir Bobby Robson.
OK, we never got over the finish-line in those campaigns, but we gave it a genuine try.
What now for the Premier League? Does this Rooney situation mark it a four or five team league?
Or could it even get worse?
