Rooney has not played since suffering a deep gash to his right thigh in the home win over Fulham on August 25, when he was caught by Hugo Rodallega's boot.
There were fears the 26-year-old could be out for up to two months, but fortunately for Rooney he escaped any muscle damage and he has returned to training sooner than expected.
Sir Alex Ferguson says he will rotate the squad for Wednesday's match, so Rooney could be given a chance, as will midfielder Darren Fletcher, who is continuing his return after nearly a year out with a bowel problem.
Sir Alex Ferguson: "Darren will certainly play against Newcastle and that is the perfect game for him to start back.
"Then we have the game against Tottenham [on Saturday] and he could be involved in that. It depends on how he does on Wednesday. It will be his first 90 minutes since 10 months out, so it’s a big one for him.
"He is handling the condition at the moment and, as we saw the other night, he is looking fine. It is a matter of hoping the condition stays dormant and he is handling his diet well. Hopefully he gets that break."
