Rafa Benitez believes that Sammy Ameobi offered a taste of what he can do after coming on to a warm ovation from the St James’ Park crowd against Rotherham United.
The 24-year-old’s last appearance on Tyneside was during the 1-1 draw with West Bromwich Albion under John Carver two seasons ago.
Since then Ameobi has been out on loan at both Cardiff City and more lately Bolton Wanderers with his career seemingly over at United.
But after Newcastle stalled in the January transfer window and Bolton failed to agree on a deal for the winger’s wages, Benitez recalled the Academy product and offered him what is surely one last chance at the club.
Ameobi’s shock return resulted in a cameo role off the bench in the 4-0 win against the Millers with Benitez happy with his contributions.
When asked about Ameobi’s display, Benitez said: “He did well, the fans were happy with him.
“He started the game really well. We know he has quality and he has to show this on the pitch.
“He is training really well and I am pleased for him. We knew we needed a player like him who can bring quality in the wider area and he showed some of that (against Rotherham).
“He did that today.”
