Many argue that Alan Shearer is the greatest striker to ever wear the black and white. Even better than Jackie Milburn and Hughie Gallacher, who won medals while at St James' Park, something that Shearer will always rue.
But Shay Given is looking to make his own mark in the game, and is already regarded as the best Toon goalkeeper since Ronnie Simpson who was the last 'keeper to win a domestic medal with the Toon in 1955.
Shay has made it known he won't rest until he helps bring the glory days back to Tyneside, and Shearer himself believes he will achieve it.
Shearer: "Shay is the best in the Premier League. You might say I'm biased but I don't think I am, I was with him at Blackburn from an early age. I have played with him for I don't know how many years now and he just seems to get better with every season.
"He has been an outstanding player for Newcastle for some time now and he was certainly the outstanding player of last season for his consistency and for some of the saves he made to keep us in games.
"What people don't see is the work he puts in on the training ground," added Shearer. You get out of the game what you put in, and, with that being the case, Shay will just keep on getting better and better. He has worked so hard to get to where he is and is a great lad as well.
"I'm sure he will get his rewards one day, because he deserves every award he gets."
