Shearer has made it known all season that he would not work under Ashley, but no-one would be hit harder than the GOALden Boy if the Geordies hit the trap door.
The 18th-placed Magpies are battling Premier League relegation and are desperate for a morale boost, which Shearer's appointment will inevitably provide, in their battle to escape the drop zone.
Nicky Butt told reporters last week that the players were desperate for someone to step in, suggesting Hughton was a bit of a laughing stock with his tactics and team selection.
Shearer's first game will be Saturday's home meeting with high-flying Chelsea, before games against Stoke, Tottenham, Portsmouth, Liverpool, North-East rivals Middlesbrough, Fulham and Aston Villa.
The Magpies are expected to confirm Shearer's appointment on Wednesday morning.
