But one Toon legend says if Ashley fails to keep Alan Shearer on board Newcastle risk no end of trouble.
Malcolm Macdonald: "Alan Shearer has to be given the job of arresting Newcastle's slide - he should have been given it the week after they were relegated.
"I realise this is a period of transition, but he is the man for the job regardless of who owns the club."
"I'm sorry to say it, but my worry is that Alan will already have big enough doubts to now think twice about doing the job.
"It would be a disaster if he was persuaded not to do the job, but the situation must be testing his patience. He's only human."
