Despite rumours Alan Shearer would wait until the end of his playing career before having surgery on his hernia, the ex-England skipper is set to travel to Germany next week to undergo an operation. Shearer has been struggling since the start of the present Premiership campaign but the club have decided to send him for surgery during the international break to ensure he misses as few games as possible.
Graeme Souness: “Alan Shearer travels tomorrow and has a hernia operation in Munich on Monday. Stephen Carr had his on Thursday and I was at the training ground this morning (Saturday) and he was running at three-quarter pace. There’s a lady who operates and she must do something different to everyone else because she gets them back very quickly. I’m hoping Alan and Stephen will be fit for a game in two weeks.”
