"The owner (Mike Ashley) understands the situation and is prepared to give him the chance."
"I know Alan Shearer well and I think he's got the qualities, and the sort of attitude and outlook, to make a very good manager.
"I think he will be a successful manager but I don't think that Newcastle should be thinking about him right now.
"If he is prepared to wait and see if Allardyce fails then so be it, but if I was Alan Shearer I'd be looking to get a job in management elsewhere.
"I don't think he should come out and say he's not interested in the job because deep down I think he is interested in the job."
