Although he’s the most unpopular man in Wigan and certain areas of South London, Bruce’s opinion is worth listening to as proved by the outstanding job he has done at Birmingham City.
And ahead of tomorrow’s game there is no doubt which of our players he fears most, despite Wednesday’s penalty disaster.
"For me, Alan is England's best centre-forward, ever. That's the highest compliment I can pay him,” he told the Evening Chronicle.
"If you look at his contribution and goals, he has done it year in, year out and is still going strong.
"He retired as an international 18 months ago and we're still talking about him.
"He's a huge player, certainly the best centre-forward I have ever played against, in terms of an English-type if you like.
"He's strong, quick in his prime and a good finisher. Above all, he's a Geordie - that makes him all the more special!
"At Manchester United, we were due to play Barcelona and Fergie told me `Sorry, you're not playing. I'm going to use Paul Parker in a man-to-man on Romario.'
"He then said it was okay because I would be playing against Blackburn and Shearer the next Saturday.
"I remember thinking I'd rather play against Romario!"
Lets hope that Bruce’s worst fears at realised at St James’ Park and Shearer can continue his impressive Premiership form.
