"We should have won, I really believe that. We had a very good chance tonight to go through," said Shearer after the 1-1 draw at St James.
"They rested one or two players but they put some internationals in, in their place.
"But we had a good chance to go through tonight, but it's not over yet."
"I think in the first half we murdered them, we really did. It was the same old story after 10 minutes they've caught us with the same old sucker punch again.
"They are very good at that with the pace they have upfront, but we battled on and kept plugging away.
"We knew the next goal was very important and we managed to get that and we pushed on but they defended very well.
"We knew coming into this game that the FA Cup was very special to the Geordie public up here.
"And after Wednesday I think we let ourselves down and it was very important we gave them something to shout about tonight."
