Former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer has been comparing Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side to one of the most infamous incarnations of his beloved Toon.
Liverpool defeated Crystal Palace 4-2 in the Premier League yesterday as their breathtaking style of play once again worked wonders in the Premier League.
That said, they certainly struggled defensively, with both goals conceded avoidable with better defending from Dejan Lovren and Alberto Moreno.
Speaking on Match of the Day this weekend the Newcastle legend stated how he saw similarities between this Liverpool side and Kevin Keegan’s infamous ‘Entertainers’ of the mid-90s:
“The number of chances they create, because of the energy they have, and as I said they do stretch teams.
“They remind me of the Newcastle team 20 odd years ago they were just superb going forward. Keegan’s with (Keith) Gillespie, (David) Ginola, (Peter) Beardsley, (Les) Ferdinand and (Faustino) Asprilla with the number of chances created.
“But the one thing that could cost them would be defensively if they don’t improve.”
There are certainly accuracies in that statement as Liverpool again won by attacking incessantly against their rivals.
Liverpool boss Klopp certainly has his side playing an attacking brand of football that has Reds fans hoping of a potentially first Premier League title win.
Of course, Newcastle United fans felt the same way about their team. Unfortunately for them the defensive frailties proved too much and Newcastle ended up losing the title race to Manchester United.
Liverpool will be hoping they can go one better than the entertainers of the past.
