Newcastle United are back on the bottom of the Premier League, winless within it after Saturday’s 6-1 defeat at Manchester City.
Like many, Shearer is exasperated by such inconsistency, never knows which team will turn up.
But having managed, himself, in the constrictive conditions of St James’ Park under Mike Ashley, can he afford McClaren any sympathy?
“No, not really,” he said.
“I don’t know if the transfer activity was different to what he expected, hoped, needed or wanted. I don’t know, only he can answer that.
“He knows what he is signing up for. I don’t know what I thought he was signing up for, but I’m sure he knew.
“Only he can answer that.”
So is relegation a real danger?
“If they perform like they did against Watford and Sheffield Wednesday, then yeah,” Shearer said.
“If they perform like they did against Chelsea, then no.
“But I don’t know, I don’t know what Newcastle are going to turn up. I don’t think anyone does. We’ve seen one extreme, which has been terrible: Sheffield Wednesday and Watford. And we’ve seen the other extreme, which was very good and very promising and encouraging against Chelsea.
“You don’t know, McClaren doesn’t know and I don’t know what Newcastle is going to turn up, and that’s the worry.
“Probably the three best performances of the season have been Manchester United away, Arsenal at home when they were down to 10, and Chelsea.
“When you look at the really poor performances, Sheffield Wednesday, Watford, Swansea (City), it doesn’t take a genius to work out what that is. There’s no pressure on the big games because everyone expects you to get beaten anyway.”
Reminded that Newcastle remain with Sunderland the only two clubs in the Premier and Football League without a league win, Shearer added: “I get that, I see that. The longer it goes on, the harder it is.”
So with the Wear-Tyne derby on the post-international break horizon, Sunderland in search of a new saviour, can’t Shearer spy a chink of optimistic light? Just...
“Our record against them has to change sooner rather than later,” he said.
“Sunderland have been desperately poor defensively as well, so something might give.”
THE TOON'S GREATEST 100 PLAYERS ... EVER!
AMAZON: http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Toons-Greatest-Players-EVER/dp/132629685X
Available from M&M News, in Newcastle.
This book is a collection of the 100 Greatest Newcastle United players of all time, as voted for by NewcastleUtd-Mad.co.uk readers and a panel of journalists who contribute to the website. The players are in an order of five-per-chapter, counting down from 100 to Newcastle United's greatest ever player (as viewed by the author), but the whole point of the book is for YOU (the reader) to decide who goes where. The list is not, by any means, definitive. As with all books of this nature, whether it be "Greatest Albums"; "Best Movies Of All Time"; or "Top 100 Pin-Ups Of The Year" ... no two people have exactly the same opinion. There will be controversy over who is on the list, and chances are, more controversy over who is not. Here are the best of the best. I have painted the picture with each player's profile. Where they end up in the league of NUFC's Greatest is up to you. Because YOU have the final word.
Otherwise ... if you want a signed copy (for a birthday, etc) for £9.95 and no postage ... you can meet me before a match and I will bring a copy along.
