Alan Shearer scored his 200th league goal to complete a memorable five days for the former England captain as Newcastle went top of the Premiership for the first time in nearly four years.
Shearer had already been on cloud nine after celebrating the birth of his first son - Will - on Friday.
And he showed his potency on the pitch as he scored from the penalty spot at Highfield Road to bring up his double century of goals in his 375th league appearance spanning spells at Southampton, Blackburn and St James' Park.
Coventry must be sick of the sight of Shearer who has now scored 16 times in his last 15 meetings with them.
In all honesty Shearer otherwise had a relatively quiet game and never managed another effort on goal despite chants from the Newcastle fans of "you're still England's number one".
But a second goal on the hour mark from substitute and former Coventry player Kevin Gallacher ensured a third successive league win for Bobby Robson's side.
Not everyone was delighted with Shearer's achievement including Coventry defender Paul Williams who appeared to jostle with Shearer as the duo left the pitch at half-time.
Williams had also pointed an accusing finger at Laurent Charvet, presumably believing that the Frenchman had made a meal of going down for the penalty which led to Shearer joining the double ton club.
But Coventry could have few complaints about the outcome after a promising start in which record signing Craig Bellamy had hit the woodwork and their best player, Youssef Chippo, had been particularly prominent.
After that they seldom tested keeper Shay Given in the Newcastle goal as the visitors looked the more composed side with Gary Speed and Robert Lee pulling the strings in the middle of the park.
