The 35-year-old came off the bench to win his testimonial game with an injury-time penalty before saying his goodbyes to the club's fans.
Shearer: "There was more than just a tear in my eye when I was walking around. I defy anyone not to have a tear. The way they have been, it's just incredible. Where else do you get something like that?
"I thank the fans for everything they have given me. It's just been very, very special. It was absolutely brilliant - a big thanks to them all."
Shearer took the acclaim of the Toon Army before kick-off when he walked on to the pitch with wife Lainya and children Chloe, Hollie and Will. It was all a little too much for his young son, who tried to stop the deafening noise by putting his hands over his ears. He refused to sit in the dug-out, prefering to sit with one of the ballboys.
Asked if he would encourage his five-year-old son to follow in his footsteps, he replied: "I might not send him down to Southampton.
"He loves his football, and if he does I'll be right behind him. It's a wonderful life - in fact, I might have a word with the chairman and see if he wants to sign him."
