The defiant dad-of-three has refused to let the illness restrict him and last week appeared at the launch of the Alan Shearer Foundation, which hopes to raise £250,000 for disabled people.
Alan Shearer: “I get messages to him on a regular basis. I’m really sorry to see the way he is and the way he is suffering.
“He played a huge part in the shaping of Newcastle, and to see him how he is today is difficult.
“But the fact he continues to support charitable causes sums him up, the fact that he wanted to be there. He’s a fighter and he will keep on fighting.”
