United lost 2-1 at St James' Park and after Duncan Ferguson (who also didn't make the starting line-up) almost lifted the manager's door off its hinges ... Ruud caught the next train out of Central Station!

Many times since Alan Shearer has insisted he has no grudge against his former manager, but Gullit still has it at the back of his mind.

When Sir Bobby Robson took over at St James' Park, Gullit gave the new boss some advice.

"Alan Shearer is BIGGER than Newcastle United Football Club", as if to say ... "you haven't a chance so long as he is still at the St James' Park".

Yesterday saw the launch of the Professional Footballers' Association's centenary game, in which Shearer will play for an England Legends XI against a World XI, presenting the prospect of a reunion with former Gullit.

Shearer: "I have tremendous respect for him as a coach. Whatever went went on, went on.

"He might even play centre-half."
