Shearer set to sign new deal

The skipper’s current deal runs out at the end of the season but he has agreed a one-year extension, reportedly on the same very tidy terms that he currently enjoys, and would already have signed but for talks being put on hold due of the death of Freddy Shepherd’s mother.

Shearer said: "I haven't signed it yet, but it's all been agreed and I hope and am confident that we can get it done before Saturday's game.

"Hopefully it will be signed tomorrow before we head off, but because of the sad circumstances the chairman had earlier in the week, it was understandably put on the backburner and not spoken about for a few days.

"But we're hopeful that it can be done tomorrow. It's all been agreed.

"I'm very pleased, obviously. It's where I want to finish and that just confirms it for me that I will.

"I'll be pleased when I get it signed and I can carry on as normal. I've given myself another year now (to win a trophy), so I'll keep everything crossed. That's the dream."

Some good news at last.
