The Entertainer’s 20th anniversary game raised more than £50,000 for the Alan Shearer Foundation.
Newcastle United’s thrilling side took on a Manchester United Select XI earlier this month and rolled back the years with a thrilling performance in front of 6,000 people at Kingston Park.
Shearer played and scored in the game, whipping out his famous arm-in-the-air celebration in the black and white shirt for one last time.
The money raised from the match, which finished 2-2, has been donated to Shearer’s own charity, which supports disabled people across the region.
And organiser Steve Wraith has revealed just how much was raised.
He said: “We are delighted that the event has raised £53,000 for the Alan Shearer Foundation. The players enjoyed it as much as the fans did. And Alan scoring with a trademark finish was the icing on the cake.”
Shearer’s foundation was set up to directly support the Alan Shearer Centre in Newcastle .
The centre, which is part of the St Cuthberts Care charity, opened in 2007, a year after Shearer hung up his boots.
Almost 10 years on, the former number nine is still fundraising to keep the vital service open.
One of Shearer’s aims is to keep the centre free of charge for the people that use it.
Shearer - who now has a CBE and a statue outside St James’ Park - has organised golf days and charity balls to help keep the coffers full.
A spokesperson for the foundation said: “Thank you to everyone who supported our Entertainers football match at Kingston Park on 9 October. The crowd of 6,000 people helped us raise a fantastic £53,000 on the day - a huge step towards our £250,000 annual target.”
