So it is hardly surprising to hear the Toon legend urge Wayne Rooney to "stick one on" his Manchester United team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo when the pair next meet.
Rooney had a minor scuffle with Portugal's Ricardo Carvalho in the 62nd minute of England's World Cup game against Portugal in Gelsenkirchen and Ronaldo seemed to encourage Argentinian referee Horacio Marcelo Elizondo to give his United team-mate a red card.
Rooney pushed Ronaldo, told him to "f*** off", but the TV cameras picked up Ronaldo winking towards the Portugal bench as Rooney made his way off. And let's not forget it was a training ground punch up with Ronaldo that saw Ruud van Nistelrooy dropped from the Man Utd team a few weeks ago.
Shearer: "I think Wayne Rooney should go back to the Manchester United training ground and stick one on Ronaldo."
