Alan Pardew is expected to have more to say today on Shola Ameobi’s selection in a 26-man provisional Nigeria squad for the African Cup of Nations.

The Journal claims ... Newcastle thought they had a gentleman’s agreement with the striker he would not make himself available for the tournament.

Shola was named in the squad and the player made it known he will "certainly be available" to play for his country ... ahead of his club.

Meanwhile, Pardew wouldn’t be drawn on a threat from the Nigeria Football Federation to pursue sanctions against the club if Shola Ameobi doesn’t link up with his country for the African Cup of Nations next month.

Pardew – who this week claimed Ameobi won’t be involved – is instead expected to respond today when he gives a Press conference ahead of Saturday’s game at Arsenal.

Ameobi has been named in Nigeria’s preliminary 32-man squad, which meets up in Portugal today for a training camp.

Surprisingly, ex-United striker Obafemi Martins and West Bromwich Albion’s Peter Odemwingie haven’t been called up by coach Stephen Keshi.

FIFA rules stipulate that if no prior agreement between club and country has been reached, then players who do not report for international duty can be made ineligible for the period of their proposed call-up as well – as facing an additional five-day extension.

NFF board member Chris Green said: “These clubs are not only disrespecting Nigeria but FIFA and CAF (Confederation of African Football) as well.

“The rules are clear on international games approved by FIFA, so we consider these comments as not only ridiculous, but totally disrespectful.

“We know the rules. FIFA has made it clear that these clubs will not be able to use these players for the duration of the Nations Cup, plus an additional five days.

“We will further push for additional sanctions – we understand these clubs employ our players – but they are also international footballers.”

Ameobi won his first cap for Nigeria last month.
