Sir Bobby ends speculation

Having spent £43million on players in the past two years (and making only £300k by selling players) the club apparently needs to make sure that we are in the lucrative group stages of the Champions League before spending big again.

"If we get into the Champions League then by the time we qualify the transfer window will be shut," Sir Bobby told the Sunday Sun.

"And we already have a lot of players here ourselves so we are not short going into the season.

"We're just going to sit tight and keep our powder dry, just waiting and seeing what's happening. Maybe we'll just wait and see what happens until Christmas.

"Then we might say: 'There's a loophole in the squad there, there's a loophole there, there's a piece of jigsaw there - so let's do something'.

"The Champions League is crucial to us. It's big money and it's where the players want to play and where we want to be recognised.

"So it's vital to us."

There are still some obvious gaps in the team but Sir Bobby is right on this one, there is no point in risking future financial problems by buying players who aren’t good enough for the first team but are highly paid.

With another Champions League campaign behind us we may be able to buy the kind of top quality players we need to turn us into a title winning team.
