Some time ago Smith was tipped to partner his long time buddy Kieron Dyer at Elland Road in the days when Leeds were a European force and Dyer seemed to spend more time at Elland Road than St James' Park.
But it seems the England international is set to REPLACE Dyer at Newcastle.
The Leeds "Dream Team" was intended to house Dyer, Smith, Jonathan Woodgate and Rio Ferdinand. How those days have changed as Leeds will face Hartlepool United this coming season as their "derby" match.
26-year-old Smith is due to hold talks today (Tuesday) with Newcastle United manager Sam Allardyce over personal terms, with the transfer expected to go through this week.
Middlesbrough tried to sign Smith last month, to replace Mark Viduka.
