Smith In Black And White
The re-opening of the transfer window is three months away but a manager who has spent £50m already this year has found himself linked with numerous players. Newcastle's scouts are understood to be monitoring Manchester United's Alan Smith (again), while the Deportivo La Coruna midfielder Aldo Duscher says he has held preliminary talks with Graeme Souness.
We had our digs at chairman Freddy Shepherd in the summer for missing out on a number of Souness transfer targets, but he was saving his dosh for the big one ... Michael Owen ... when it seemed odds-on he was heading back to Liverpool.
Souness has made it clear in the past Manchester United striker/midfielder Alan Smith is a player he would love to bring to St James' Park. He tried back in June but the Mancs made it known the England international was set to be the new Roy Keane, and now Keane has said he is leaving in the summer, it seems certain Smith will be part of Alex Ferguson's lonf term plans.
Souness last night shrugged off all transfer talk, saying: "We have spent a lot of money on players we have not even seen play yet. I think the chairman would fall off his chair if I went and asked him for some more."
