Smith Rues Yellow Cards!

Smith is obviously proud of his England caps, but he says he needs to be performing for Newcastle ... and then his England career will take care of itself.

Smith was called up by Steve McClaren for the European Championship qualifiers against Estonia and Russia, but did not make the bench for either fixture because of a niggling knee problem.

Darren Bent has tried to 'bull up' his Spurs team-mates by saying the club is in a false position and will "give some a hiding soon". Newcastle are next on their fixture list and if Martin Jol is to keep his job he has to start winning soon.

But Smith has returned the compliment, and said the Toon are on the verge of a big result ... and why not against Spurs?

Smith: "Newcastle's the most important thing for me, to be honest.

"International honours are always nice, but if you're playing well for your club, the international scene takes care of itself.

"Last time when we went away, we came back and got a poor result against Derby. And we can't let that happen again against Tottenham.

"We probably played our best football of the season in the first half (against Everton).

"We did the same at Manchester City, but came out in the second half and left ourselves vulnerable.

"Once we get into a winning habit, we'll have a team capable of shutting out games, and that'll be a vital asset for us.

"And if we can play like we did in the first halves against Everton and Man City for 90 minutes, then someone's going to get a good hiding.

"We've got to make St James's a fortress, and make sure nobody looks forward to coming here."
