With Wayne Rooney, Andy Johnson and Darren Bent all sidelined, Smith may find himself up front alongside Newcastle team-mate Michael Owen in what could be a just what Steve McClaren is looking for.
England´s qualifier with Israel next month, is a must win fixture and McClaren´s future could depend on it. So he will be looking long and hard at Owen and Smith playing together.
This all-Newcastle forward line is the first tfor England since Alan Shearer and Les Ferdinand faced Poland in 1996.
McClaren: "One man's injury is another man's opportunity.
"If you take your opportunity it can put you in the team later on, so these are important games for them.
"Peter (Crouch) is a consideration - but first and foremost, we have to prepare for Israel and look at one or two things we might want to try.
"Alan Smith's attitude and commitment is fantastic. He has needed that to come back from his injury.
"He knows he can be better - but after a full pre-season, his conditioning is a lot better now."
