The Trotters have ruled out a move for the Newcastle midfielder, although reporters claim Gary Megson had him on his wish-list.
Megson: "I'm an admirer of Alan Smith, he's a terrific player, but there's been nothing because the transfer window is closed.
"I don't know where all these things come from, but it's not here."
