Smoggies Battle It Out In Zurich
The Smoggies were involved in a bit of trouble after their match in Zurich when their fans were attacked by Swiss supporters. But the violence following Middlesbrough's UEFA Cup match will have no bearing on England's friendly international against Argentina next month in Switzerland.
Police fired rubber bullets to disperse Grasshoppers supporters who had targeted visiting fans after Boro won 1-0 in their group opener on Thursday night.
However, Middlesbrough's visiting fans were largely absolved of any blame, with a Swiss police spokesman on Friday morning indicating Zurich supporters had lived up to their undesirable reputation. But it was stressed that Geneva, where England are due to face Argentina on November 12, is more placid, and it is understood the Football Association are not reviewing their decision to play the friendly on neutral ground.
Newcastle played in Zurich in October 1999 and, although we won 2-1, we never suffered any trouble from the locals. There was an intimidating atmosphere prior to the match in an Irish bar in the city, but nothing to write home about. And the Swiss took Toon chants of "You're just a town full of Germans" in good spirits at the game itself.
Berne is located just 79 miles from Geneva, yet the Swiss authorities are confident they will be able to avert trouble involving supporters of the four teams.
