Toon midfielder Nobby Solano has denied allegations in some publicationsthis morning that he was an alcoholic.
The Peruvian recently walked away from a high-speed crash in Lima after
falling asleep at the wheel. Solano was driving his BMW 646 when it careered off the road, hit the pavement and overturned before bursting into flames. Amazingly the 31-year-old midfielder was able to climb out of the wreckage almost without a scratch, blaming jetlag for nodding off.
He was banned from driving for 18 months by Newcastle JPs in 2001 for drink driving.
Solano: "To say I was an alcoholic was a stupid thing to say. How could I be an alcoholic and still play football in Europe for the past five years?
"I blinked for a second and lost control. Then I hit the kerb.''
