"It has been disappointing not to have been able to play since I came back to Newcastle," he told the club's official website. "I'm recovering now, the injury is getting better and better. But it is important that I wait until I'm 100 percent fit, so I will see what happens later in the week.
"I'm looking forward to making my debut and obviously I would love that to be on Saturday against Manchester City.
"But I have not played much over the last couple of weeks and I don't want to play then have to come off after 25 minutes or half an hour with the same problem. It is important to get it right."
