Kieron Dyer's latest comeback ended before it had even begun, with Dyer, named in the squad for the weekend fixture at Portsmouth, not even travelling to Fratton Park having suffered yet another recurrence of his injury woes. Many Toon fans are starting to believe he will always be injury-prone.
Graeme Souness: "We have employed a new club doctor, it's up to him now. It is a concern. I wouldn't go as far as to say it was career threatening but it is a concern. I want to get him on the pitch. He has a problem with his hamstrings, both of them I believe, and he will be hurting and frustrated at this time.
"He loves playing football, he is desperate to play and we're all desperate for him. He can see I have brought good players in and he wants to be out on the pitch with them."
Souness has sanctioned the appointment of Dr Guy Stevenson.
Graeme Souness: "He is an orthopaedic specialist who has been working in Newcastle. He is Scottish so he has an advantage with me."
