Scotland boss Alex McLeish and former Wigan manager Paul Jewell have apparently ruled themselves out of the running, while England under-21 and former Manchester City chief Stuart Pearce has also distanced himself from the rumours.
Wigan have managed to gain just one point in their last nine outings and look destined for the drop.
So candidates are dropping like flies.
Chairman Dave Whelan was criticised in the summer for promoting Jewell's right hand man and was even put on the spot on the day he named the new manager.
A SKY TV reporter told him none of the 20-odd Wigan fans he had spoken to was happy with the appointment, and the chairman blasted back "he deserves the chance. OK he wasn't very successful in his last job as manager, but I think he is the right man for us."
Graeme Souness, Joe Royle and Mike Newell are apparently in a three-way battle.
