Newcastle lost to Liverpool on Boxing Day 2-0 and skipper Alan Shearer admitted "it could have been a few more". Graeme Souness staged an inquest afterwards, but admits he got his tactics wrong.
Souness: "Part of our game plan was to stop them in midfield, they are so strong there with Gerrard and Alonso, but it did not work. We were trying to get the ball to (Albert) Luque in their last third, and did not do it. Michael Owen's complaint was that we did not get any service to him up front.
"We played right into their hands, it certainly was not the plan to drop off and let them ping diagonal balls onto their two strikers' heads.
"Then getting Bowyer sent off just made things worse."
