"People in football know what this club is about, people in football know it is only a matter of time before someone gets it right," he said. "The person who gets it right here will have the best club in Britain to manage, and the players will have the best club in Britain, if not Europe, to play for.

"The reason I say that is because this club has not won anything for so long. The person who gets it right and the players who get it right will be at the best place in European football to play. That I firmly believe.

"This is not a hard football club to sell to a player. Wayne Rooney had the choice, whether or not to stay in the North West and play for Manchester United or move to the North East and, as I understand it, it was a close call.

"He chose to stay in the North West with Manchester United. In the time I have been here, whoever I have contacted about players, there has never been a negative response. The first reaction, generally, has been `I'd love to'."
