Speed’s decision to travel with the Wales squad to the USA despite his groin injury impressed Des Shanklin, who believes that it was just another demonstration of his commitment to the country’s cause.
"If ever there is a man for the future of Wales it is Gary Speed," Shanklin told The Sun.
"The fact that he went on the trip to California speaks volumes about the type of man he is.
"He is Welsh through and through and has been a loyal servant for many years."
But there is no need to worry about Speed leaving just yet, as he is determined to add to his 73 caps by qualifying for the finals of Euro 2004, while Hughes has no intention of leaving the job he has done so successfully in the near future.
