"I certainly did not intend that as a shot, it was a cross and it was very lucky to go in," Bernard told nufc.co.uk.
"I was of course happy that the ball did go in the net to give us the goal, but we did not help ourselves by conceding two more goals to them before half time.
"They are a quality side and even though they had many players missing through injury they were still very good. They were excellent attacking and we know that our defending was poor.
"We made too many mistakes and against Manchester United you cannot possibly do that."
It looks unlikely that Sky will be approaching Bernard to take over from Andy Gray as their main football analyst.
