It's a long time since the Toon tried to ship Shola off to Stoke City, when they took him on a six-month loan deal, with an option to sign him for £1m when it concluded.
That was January 2008 and Shola made just three starts for the Potters, before they sent him back to Tyneside.
The 31-year-old has another year left on his St James’s Park deal, and United manager Alan Pardew is keen to see Ameobi agree a contract extension.
Alan Pardew: “He’s still got another year here, and I don’t see a problem extending that.
“I think the bottom line with Shola will be how long he wants to stay at one club, because he’s been here all his career.
“I hope he wants to stay, but that’ll be his decision.”
