Newcastle fans are urged to wear black and white shirts; talk Geordie; buy stotties; drink loads of beer; sing the "Blaydon Races" in English; and shout "Yer Mackem bastard" at Kenwyne Jones.

But ... being serious now ... Alan Pardew hailed the success of French Day at St James’ Park last Sunday.

Alan Pardew: “The concept of ‘French Day’ took a bit of pressure off the team.

“There wasn’t that anxiety in the crowd after we went a goal behind with their first shot at goal.

“Poor old Robbie (Elliott) didn’t have a chance with it. You thought ‘this could be difficult’ – but we didn’t panic.

“I thought that was as calm as we’ve been in a game.

“Robbie, after the first goal, was terrific. He took some crosses and looked accomplished.

“He kicked really well. His distribution’s going to add to us, he’s very accurate. That helped us.

“Steven Taylor and Cabaye were as good as anybody on the pitch – every bit as good as Gouffran and Moussa.

“None of them were as good as Debuchy – he was by far the best player on the pitch. He was outstanding.

“That has been a big signing for us – I just wish we’d done it in July. There were some particular highlights.

“Cisse worked his socks off, and then he got that wonder goal.

“Taylor was as good as he’s been for me.

“It wasn’t anything to do with my own personal feelings – it was just a great day.”
