We knew Shearer would miss the Chelsea game but it was a shock when his strike partner failed to make the starting line-up. Owen sustained a minor groin strain as he engaged in shooting practice following Friday's training session and, although he travelled to London in the hope of making a prompt recovery, he was unable to face the Premiership champions.
Souness: "Michael felt his groin in training on Friday. He thought he would get away with it but, on Saturday morning, it was clear that it wasn't quite right. I don't think it is a serious problem. I can't see it keeping him out for the trip to Everton, and hopefully we will have them both on the pitch at Goodison."
Albert Luque is also said to be in line for the match after injury, but we've heard that one before. Seeing is believing, as all the talk of the Spaniard making rapid progress seems to have backfired on the backroom staff.
