Malcolm Macdonald: “As they stand, they could be watching the next major tournament on TV too.
“It’s really down to how determined they are – but they have got over the first hurdle by helping Newcastle get back into the Premier League.
“That was vital because Capello will not consider you seriously if you’re playing Championship football. Both Andy and Steven have to set their sights as high as possible this season.
“They’ve got to be consistent and catch the eye, and force their way into the fold and try to get into the squads for the qualifiers for the Euros.
“It can be done and it’s achievable, but I think they’ve got to work extremely hard and remember that they are both Newcastle’s future and prize assets.
“I think while Andy has time on his side, next season is time for Steven to look and play like the complete professional.
“If you look at the top international defenders in the World Cup they will stick to the basics and they won’t break the golden rules of trying the audacious out there.
"Nobody gets away with trying that at the top level, and it’s something to consider for any young aspiring international defender.
“I’m not going to be one of these former players that comes out and says both Andy and Steven will make it, because it’s not cast iron, it is down to their application next season.
"Carroll took a lot of plaudits last season but he can’t rest on that.
“The first half of the season saw him score just a couple of goals, but he had a great run in the second.
“He’s got to look at how good he can be and how bad he can be, assess the strengths and weaknesses and make sure he’s the main man at his club, in the same way as Rooney at Man U and Drogba at Chelsea.
“You’ve got to aim high.
“Look at Darren Bent – he scored 25 goals for Sunderland in a poor team, kept them up and he still didn’t make it.
“That’s the benchmark for Carroll if he wants to be in the international reckoning at senior level in the next couple of years.”
