The Newcastle keeper is expected to rejoin full training next Monday, and may feature in the United squad for the Premiership clash with Charlton on October 28. Less than six weeks after major surgery for a perforated bowel suffered in a collision with West Ham's Marlon Harewood last month.
Glenn Roeder: "There's a good chance that the start of the week after next Shay could be back in full training. He is back at the training ground, starting to do some work. He has started jogging this week. If we get him through light training next week he can start to do some handling."
At the weekend Petr Cech was kept in hospital overnight following his clash with Reading's Stephen Hunt which left Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho fearing for his goalkeeper's life.
There was no personal problems between Newcastle and West Ham over the Given/Harewood incident, but that was far from the case between Chelsea and Reading. Mourinho believes Hunt's challenge in the opening stages at the Madejski Stadium was comparable to Ben Thatcher's elbow on Pedro Mendes earlier this season, which resulted in a lengthy ban for the Manchester City defender.
Chelsea reserve goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini was then carried off late in the game and captain John Terry had to play in goal as the visitors closed out on a 1-0 win after Frank Lampard's free-kick was deflected in just before the break.
