Latics’ boss Uwe Rosler: “James Tavernier knows Perchy well and I know he spoke very well about his experience.”
The youngster always felt he was not given a chance at Newcastle under Alan Pardew, and the two could meet up again if Wigan promoted ... and IF Pardew is still at St James' Park.
Tavernier, who was not given a Premier League start under Alan Pardew and spent last term on loan at Rotherham, said he is looking forward to a new challenge. He said: “My time at Rotherham was a good stepping -stone.
“It helped me out a lot and gave me a platform to perform.
“I felt I seized the opportunity with both hands.
“It is a new chapter in my career now.
“I cannot wait to put on the Wigan shirt and show the fans and the manager what I can do out on the field. I am a very attacking full-back - I scored five goals last year.
“Hopefully, I can improve that even more this season – fans will see me getting up the pitch and attacking while defending too.”
