Simpson knew nothing about the incident when Jose Enrique’s clearance hit him on the back and rebounded beyond Steve Harper.
Chris Hughton: “It was a strange goal – I couldn’t quite figure out how it went in initially, but it’s probably one that’ll be shown a few times on Soccer AM, and it got them back into the game.
“They probably deserved that, because they gave a good account of themselves.
“We didn’t start the game so well, but the goal settled us down a little bit, and alleviated a few of the fears.
“After that, we went on to create a few chances and in the end, with Wayne Routledge’s chance and Kevin’s chance early in the second half, we could have made life a little bit more comfortable for ourselves.
“In the end, it became a little bit scrappy, but that’s what happens when you concede when we did.
“We have been able to come to the likes of Reading and soak up a little bit of pressure – defensively we’ve been a very good unit.
“We also know that we’ve got enough in the side to break with pace, and create chances, and I think that’s how the first half went.
“In the end, I thought we were worthy winners.”
