That Late Late Show Against Arsenal

Substitute Laurent Robert, who was fouled by Sol Campbell for the spot-kick which turned Highbury into a boiling cauldron of hate for Hertfordshire official Poll, scampered through for a third Newcastle goal in injury-time which ensured the Magpies moved above Liverpool on goal difference.

Robert Pires had given Arsenal the lead with a simple tap-in but Newcastle's equaliser came with their first effort on target.

Andy O'Brien's near-post header came from a corner 13 minutes into the second half by which time Arsenal had been reduced to 10 men by Parlour's dismissal three minutes before the break.

Then came Shearer's penalty which left Arsenal striker Thierry Henry having to be physically restrained by players from both sides and a policeman from approaching Poll at the end of the game.

At the start of last season, the same official sent off three players at Highbury in a match against Liverpool when Patrick Vieira, Dietmar Hamann and Gary McAllister got their marching orders.

Parlour, sent off on the opening day of the season at Middlesbrough, registered the 39th red card of manager Arsene Wenger's five-year reign at Highbury for two reckless bookable offences.

His first was a foul on Nikos Dabizas and his second, which came three minutes from half-time, a trip on Shearer as he raced back to try to retrieve a broken-down Arsenal attack.

Shearer appeared to try to persuade referee Poll that the second offence was not that serious but the hard-line official had left himself no option.

It left Arsenal to battle against the odds in the second half until Bellamy's equally contentious dismissal after totally dominating the first which had been littered with petty fouls.

Newcastle's defence had already taken a roasting from the pace of Henry and Sylvain Wiltord before Kanu, picked ahead of crowd favourite Dennis Bergkamp, passed up a golden opportunity in only the fifth minute.

Wiltord's cross and some poor marking left the big Nigerian with a free header in the six-yard box but he put it tamely over the bar. And it was Kanu again who let battered Newcastle off the hook again 11 minutes later.

Henry's fabulous body swerve on the left-wing touchline left O'Brien for dead and the striker then laid on a perfect ball for Parlour whose effort allowed Dabizas to block.

But the ball ran for Kanu who, instead of slotting home, decided on a typically extravagant drop of the shoulder which put Given on his backside - and then lifted the ball over the bar.

It was all acrobatics again when Henry, with his back to goal, juggled the ball and took off to cross from the right with a bicycle kick four minutes later.

The ball flew over the head of Pires in the six-yard box but when quick-witted Ashley Cole returned it into the goalmouth Pires was still there to tap it home.

Newcastle barely managed a worthwhile attack in the opening 45 minutes but that all changed, of course, in the second half.

However, they still found themselves resisting the belligerent reprisals of the 10-man Gunners who had centre-back Martin Keown heavily bandaged after sustaining a gaping head-wound in an aerial clash with Shearer.

Henry twice forced Shay Given into sprawling saves with fierce drives and Pires was superbly denied by Dabizas when he moved in on a Lauren cross eight yards out.

But Bobby Robson's double substitution, sending on Robert and Lomana Lua Lua in the 56th minute, led to Newcastle's equaliser two minutes later when Lua Lua's cross was headed in at the near-post by the unmarked O'Brien.

It looked certain Newcastle would go on and claim their first win in London for four years and at the 30th attempt.

But all bets looked were off again when Bellamy clashed with Cole and, having been booked for dissent in the first half, was sent packing by the busy Poll.

The battling Gunners took charge again but then with six minutes left Robert scampered clear through the middle and, although Campbell's recovery tackle looked good, Poll pointed to the spot and Shearer crashed the ball home.

Robert's runaway strike at the death sealed matters and left Arsenal total despair - but Newcastle at the top of the tree.
