That Toon Player Who Broke The Rules!

We followed up the article by asking Toon fans if they could name the past Newcastle player who arrived at St James' Park - cup-tied for European football - but played for us in the same competition the same season.

The answer was Benny Arentoft. He was signed from Scottish club Morton, having played for them in the Fairs Cup in 1968/9 ... then went on to help the Mags win the cup the same campaign.

Arentoft made 64 appearances, scoring 3 goals in his three years on Tyneside.

Benny signed from Morton, having played for Danish side Bronslioj and cost £18,000. He joined Blackburn Rovers for £25,000.

He was cup-tied, and we still cannot understand how he went un-noticed that season. Many of us expected a backlash, and even expulsion, when it came to light. But it never did.

As for Barry ... the story gains a twist as Arsenal join the chase ... allegedly.

Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill has described Arsene Wenger's comments about Gareth Barry as "bizarre".

The England midfielder has looked set for a move to Liverpool all summer but that now appears to have stalled and speculation Barry could move to Arsenal instead has emerged.

Gunners boss Wenger admitted this week the 27-year-old is "one of the players we follow", adding: "The problems with players who are 27, 28 is that you pay big money but you get nothing back, no resale."

O'Neill said: "I've heard nothing from Arsene Wenger himself, so it is strange. I read his comments and I just thought they were strange. Bizarre, really.

"What I would say is that Arsene Wenger doesn't usually come out with comments like that. I accept he has made a bit of a slip, shall we say."
