Referee Howard Webb's controversial decision to award Newcastle a stoppage-time penalty plunged Fulham into despair at Craven Cottage.
The home side had been seconds away from the draw they needed to clamber out of the Barclays Premier League's bottom three but were doomed to defeat when Webb adjudged that Elliot Omozusi had fouled Alan Smith.
Joey Barton despatched the spot-kick to make sure Omozusi's 19th birthday was well and truly ruined.
The home fans were convinced Webb had blundered as Smith did not have control of the ball when the challenge came in, with James Milner then going on to fire in a shot that was saved.
But Webb was adamant and the travelling supporters returned north in celebration.
The result gives Newcastle manager Sam Allardyce another lifeline as his side moved into the top half of the table and intensified the pressure on Fulham boss Lawrie Sanchez, who has presided over just two wins this season.

Second-half goals from Fulham strikers Heidar Helguson and Brian McBride shot down Newcastle and gave the London side a notable double.
Chris Coleman's side took control after half-time as the visitors were undermined by mistakes from Nicky Butt and Titus Bramble.
Butt blundered with a dismal backpass in the 49th minute which let Helguson gallop through and thunder a shot beyond goalkeeper Steve Harper.
And Bramble should have been sent off for a deliberate tug on Helguson when the striker was clean through in the 60th minute.
Four minutes later, though, McBride's sweeping right-footed shot - following brilliant work by substitute Papa Bouba Diop - confirmed Newcastle's first league defeat of 2007.
Obafemi Martins stoppage-time goal was just a consolation for the visitors.
Fulham were good value for a fine win after seeing their unbeaten run come to an end at Sheffield United on Tuesday.

Fulham midfielder Steed Malbranque celebrated his come-back from injury by heaping further pressure on under fire Newcastle boss Graeme Souness.
Malbranque was making only his second appearance of the last month - with a thigh strain his latest setback.
But the Frenchman showed no rustiness as he buried the only goal of the Barclays Premiership match after coming on as a second half substitute.
Antti Niemi made his Fulham debut after completing a £1million move from Southampton earlier in the week and made two magnificent late saves to ensure his new employers finished with all three points.
The Cottagers offered more as an attacking force with striker Heidar Helguson, back after a hip injury, squandering the best opportunity of the first-half and striking the bar after the break.
Brian McBride, also returning after a spell in the treatment room with a neck problem, also caused problems.
Newcastle, who were weakened by yet another injury this morning when Titus Bramble failed a fitness test after damaging his foot, had a Jean-Alain Boumsong chance cleared off the line and would have snatched a share of the spoils but for Niemi's late brilliance.
