The former Toon star was a Liverpool player, and when he struck the bar early in the game, things went sadly wrong in the Leppings Lane end of the ground.
Had he scored ... he says things would have been "a lot worse than they became", and that goal could have been a massive burden on his shoulders if it was seen as the critical moment of the tragedy.
Peter Beardsley: “It was a 3pm kick-off, and after about four minutes I hit the bar.
“At the time, I was disappointed. I remember turning round and looking behind our goal, and it was chaos.
“In hindsight, if I had scored, things could have been worse.
"That’s just how I felt.
“We were sat in our kits for an hour and 40 minutes.
"If we had known what was happening outside, we would have been out there helping.”
