On a bad day for the North East, furious Sunderland manager Ricky Sbragia kept his players locked in the dressing room for almost an hour after his side’s pitiful surrender against Everton.
His players were booed off after David Moyes’ side eased to a 2-0 win, leaving Sunderland deep in relegation trouble.
Sbragia admitted: ‘We were so poor I would have booed myself off.’
Alan Shearer: ‘This game was never going to decide our fate but ones like Middlesbrough will,’ he said.
‘It is the most important one of my career and the same applies to every single Newcastle player.
'I have no complaints whatsoever about the outcome today because we were beaten by a very good team.
'By the end I was desperately hoping the referee would only add 30 seconds rather than two or three minutes.
‘Michael Owen wasn’t happy at being left on the bench but I wouldn’t want him to be.
'The main thing is he is a great professional and he responded in a professional manner.’
