George and Ted Robledo graced St James' Park in the 1950s, winning the FA Cup together in United's glory days. Now Shola and Sammy Ameobi have a lot to live up to.
The pair became only the third brothers to start a game for the club when they lined up against Club Brugge in the Europa League last night.
Shola Ameobi: “We thought we’d started off comfortably, but then gave away two sloppy goals.
“It was disappointing. Having not conceded in the group stages all year, we wanted to keep that run going.
“But it just shows the fighting spirit we’ve got here. We were down, but not out. We knew the game was still there for us.
“Then to pop up and get the equaliser before half-time was a bonus – it was fantastic.
“The second half was anybody’s game. Both sides wanted to win it. It was quite a good game. Unfortunately, we didn’t get the win, but we’ll take the point.”
Sammy Ameobi: “Obviously, it was my first start with Shola.
“It’s a great memory, and it’s something I’ll cherish for a long time.
“I’m glad to have contributed to his goal, and to have got us a point.
“I just said ‘please just score – any way possible!’. Obviously, he’s got the toe punt, and it’s gone past the keeper.
“I’m really happy to have contributed, and that we got a point.
“It’s a great honour – it’s great for our parents and our family.
“They’re proud of us. We don’t take anything for granted – we’ve worked hard to get where we are.
“I’m glad I’ve had the opportunity to start alongside him.
“It was a tough game.
“They’re a great side, and good at passing the ball.
“We gave away two sloppy goals and had to work our way back. It wasn’t easy. We got the two goals back and tried to win it.
“At least we came away with something.
“It was sensational strike from Vurnon. He’s got great ability, and he shows it in training every day.”
